Greenhouses - Ways to Use Them

by: Colin D Price

Have you given any thought to what benefits there are in having a greenhouse in your backyard?

You just love being around plants, but winter restricts your hobby because room in the house is allocated to a few houseplants; do you want to experiment with plants that your local climate restricts, grow stuff you only see in journals or on the box, how about eating produce that is out of season? Does that tickle your fancy? Fret no more, let's shows you how you can extend your season and experiment to your hearts content.

Well, a greenhouse is great place to get away from the stress of everyday life for one thing, and with all the added extras and automation available today, you can liken it to more like an extension to the house, which can only add value to the home.

There are a wide range of shapes and sizes of greenhouses around and you are sure to find one to suit your needs. Now consider what a greenhouse can do for you and your hobby. Whatever the weather conditions you can still indulge in your favorite pastime as owning a greenhouse allows you to control the growing environment.

A well designed greenhouse can give you all year round produce for the table, allow you to grow exotic and rare flowers like orchids and, also, you can experiment with and propagate plants to your heart's desire. Plants that grow easily in a greenhouse are all the peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and most vegetables, even in wintertime, as grow lights help overcome the short daylight hours.

Now let's get constructive here; throughout the year you are buying plants or seedlings from the garden centre to get that jump start, taking cuttings, starting off seedlings. At times you go to great lengths to keep your plants alive with protective covering or bringing them into the house for protection; the dog doesn't mind but how about your better half, don't they just love all those seed trays and cuttings all over the place, sure they do! I had a family member move 40 trays of seedlings out of the spare bedroom when he had an unexpected visitor. It would have been a whole lot easier for him if these had been growing in a greenhouse?

Greenhouses help to save money

A greenhouse will provide you with healthy plants and fresh healthy vegetables all the year round, much cheaper than buying them. You can choose the best seeds available from catalogues in the comfort of your own home, curled up in front of the fire, and get them delivered to your doorstep. Best of all, you can grow what you desire, rather than what's available at the garden centre, you can dictate when and what to start regardless of weather conditions.

Some suggestions on the ways you can use a greenhouse: Start perennial cuttings; store plants when the weather is too cold for them outside; start off your seed a lot earlier, and transplant them when the weather outside is suitable. You can venture into the art of propagation or how about experimenting with some of those exotic vegetables you ate overseas. Often they will only grow in that countries environment, however, with a greenhouse you can probably realise the dream of eating these vegetables at home, because you can control the environment with the use of heaters and lights.
