Bentgrass

This type of grass is used for laying down the lawns but is more commonly used in golf courses as well as sports field. Though it can be used in the colder climates, it's really a grass for the hotter, moister regions where it demands a lot of maintenance.

Bermuda

This is again a warm weather grass that can really spread out. It loves to go all over the terrain and will even find itself going in the shallow flowerbeds that you may have planted. Its resistant to high traffic and doesn't require very high maintenance.

Buffalo

This species of grass can survive with very little water in really hot climates, making it an ideal grass for many landscaping projects as well as areas where water is very scarce. But this grass doesn't do well in shade and has little use in colder climates.

Other types of grass that can take in the warmer moist climates are Zoysia and St. Augustine.

Carpetgrass

If you have really wet and moist soil, then it can be a great idea to plant this type of grass as this is extremely useful for soil drainage and controlling soil erosion. It also works great for parks, lawns and other low maintenance regions.

Colder climates

Fescue

This type of grass does very well in cooler climates and works well in extremely low sun light. Moreover it can handle heavy traffic extremely well and this makes it a great choice for homes, offices, landscaping, parks and any other place that you can think about.

Bluegrass

Bluegrass is extremely popular since it's extremely conducive to colder climates and can also weather extremely high traffic. For this reason, it's used for athletic field, parks, landscaping projects and even for homes. It has a vivid colour and spreads quite easily and provides a very thick coverage.

Rye grass

This grass is also for the cooler climates and extremely resistant to wear and tear. This is the reason, that its favoured for all types of athletics fields, golf courses and of course home lawns as well. It's a drought resistant grass and does well.

Other types of grass that grow extremely well in colder climates are bents and meadow Grass.

Remember that dependent on the use and the climate as well as the soil condition, types of grass should be chosen.

Essentially there are three types of lawns.

Utility lawns

This first type of lawn is a utility lawn that sees a lot of traffic and should be able to sustain a lot of wear and tear round the day, especially in homes that have a lot of children and pets. In the colder climates ryegrass will work very well and Bermuda grass would work very well in hotter climates.

Athletic or sports lawns

Sports lawns have to bear the heavy-duty sports and the wear and tear that goes along with it in all athletic fields. Especially games such as football, lawn tennis, rugby and other such ball games, damage the grass. For this reason, a resistant grass such a ryegrass is highly recommended. But if low impact games such as lacrosse are played, its advisable to lay Bents or Zoysia

High quality lawns

These are extremely well manicured lawns that need to be maintained by professionals and experts. These lawns are preferred for huge estate and country houses. Depending on the kind of climate that you live in (hot or cold), you could take your pick from varieties such as Bermuda, zoysia or even fescue.
