What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of concentrated plant essences (essential oils) to relieve stress, enhance health and well-being, prevent problems and support the healing process. A professional aromatherapist will begin with a detailed consultation about your general health, medical history and emotional wellbeing. Each treatment is individual and designed to specifically meet your needs. Your aromatherapist blends a unique combination of essential oils tailored to your specific requirements. You are covered with towels during the massage and only the area being worked on will be uncovered to protect your privacy.
Does Aromatherapy Work?
Aromatherapy can treat nervous tension, stress related conditions, insomnia, depression, anxiety, headaches, migraine, menopausal problems, PMT, muscular aches and pains. Different oils will be blends to treat different conditions e.g. oils with analgesic properties can be used to treat lower back pain, oils can also be used to calm nerves. Prior to my treatment after an in depth consultation my Aromatherapist let me smell the oils that she had decided would be best to treat my specific ailments. She explained it is important that the client is happy with the aroma of the essential oils being used.
Oils used for my Aromatherapy treatment
Body blend - Sweet almond oil was used as a base which is enriching for dry skin. To this the following were added.
Lavandin - this is a stronger and less sedating form of true Lavender which has excellent analgesic properties for muscular aches and pains. Its action is tonifying and revitalizing, calming rather than relaxing.
Rosemary - This is stimulating and cleansing oil which helps to clear mental fatigue and is a powerful analgesic for muscular aches and pains and stiffness.
Lemon - this is a cleansing and refreshing oil with an uplifting aroma and is useful for where there is stagnation in the body, be it emotional, somatic or spiritual. Lemon helps to lift the spirits and overcome mental fatigue.
Face blend - to treat my mild acne - Jojoba oil was used as a base which is a sebum balancer
French Lavender - LAVENDULA ANGUSTOFOLIA a balancing and tonifying oil, this is an excellent skin care oil which has antiseptic and wound healing properties.
What happen in my aromatherapy treatment?
I was asked to remove all my clothing except my briefs, while the therapist left the room. I then lay on the couch covered in a towel to await her return. I was then covered with more towels. The treatment began with massage in my lower back which helped to release tension and reduced a slight lower back ache. This was followed by work on my shoulders followed by the back of my legs. I turned over to lay on my back whilst being completely covered by towels. My arms front of my legs and hands were then massaged. I was then given a facial massage with a carefully selected blend of oils to treat my acne.
During my treatment I experienced a wonderful overwhelming experience of deep relaxation, whilst having all my tension massaged away (particularly many knots in my shoulders).
I was advised to drink lots of water to help to flush out the toxins that had been released from my body.
Are there any side effects?
I felt quite sore in my shoulders (which had been worked on a lot) for a couple of days after the treatment but thereafter I felt the tension in my shoulders had greatly reduced and were much better than prior to the treatment. Also a slight lower back pain I had had completely gone.
How many Treatments will you need?
Aromatherapy is a detox process; a client will feel some benefit from the first treatment. The results are more pronounced and effective if a course of three or four treatments are taken.
I would quite happily have regular treatments for the sheer indulgence of blissful relaxation
How much will each treatment session cost?
£45 for a first appointment and £40 for follow up appointments.
Aromatherapy Conclusions
I was totally overwhelmed by the wonderful feeling of deep relaxation I felt immediately following the treatment. It certainly helped considerably to relieve my tension, aches and pains. Unlike a regular massage aromatherapy has the benefit of treating specific skin conditions. Oils are also used to treat a wide range of emotional conditions as well as muscular aches and pains.
I would definitely recommend aromatherapy to anybody considering it. It is a wonderful experience that as can treats a wide range of conditions. It left me so relaxed I felt like I was floating on air.
