UK Car Tax Bands
The UK government has recently announced changes to the car tax system. We have updated this page to show the implications of these changes. The following table shows the new car tax bands that are in force. Note that all cars built after 2001 will be subject to these new car tax rules

From 2009 the highest car tax band will be M with a standard charge of £440 a year, going up to £455 in 2010. However if you buy your car in 2010 you have to pay the 'first year' car tax rate which is £950 for a car in the M car tax band.
Fuel duty is also due to go up 2p a litre in October, but this is in line with inflation.
The following table shows previous UK Car Road Tax bands for 2006-2009, along with some common cars that are in each band. As you can clearly see the more environmentally friendly your car is the chear you car tax will be!

The idea behind the Car Tax Band is to try to financially punish big car drivers to force them to buy more environmentally friendly cars. However you have to questions whether a £210 a year Car Road Tax bill is going to put someone off spending thousands of pounds on their new petrol guzzling, Carbon Dioxide beltching Porshe will really care about an extra couple of hundred pounds worth of tax?

"The only way to reduce the number of cars on the road is to increase the tax. Put it up to £1,000. We have 2 cars at present but could not afford/justify the second one at that level, so it works. Everyone should pay the same irrespective of mileage. If you think this is unfair I would compromise by charging Toyota Yaris/ EcoSaddo drivers another 20% and adding 3 points on their licence for offences to style and decency. PS. I drive an ST220 and do 30K pa."

"I for one will not be voting Labour again, thanks to the cost of Petrol and the hike in car tax my old grand Vitara is worth less. These new car tax codes should be linked to new cars not back dated this must be illegal. Range Rover sport man who can afford a £50K car wont be put off by an extra £200 a year. Labour looks after the rich while bashing the working man. "

"Mmmm....not rocket science is it. Who is going to vote for this government after they way it milks us dry. Do they spend it all on green issues....do they heck.....it\'s just a great excuse to tax us even more. Several thousand years ago you could walk from England to Europe without getting your feet wet. However the ice melted flooding the channel and cut us off.....must have been all of those cave men with their high c02 polluting flintstone cars!"

"The page could do with the prices for pre-Y reg cars that are just taxed in the old style, not on emissions. As for the taxation, it is a bit daft to say the least, I will not get ranty or political and I agree with the principal that polluter pays. In effect a tax disc for pollution is pointless, a parked car is not polluting so surely we should only pay as we drive? The easiest way is tax on fuel. A gas guzzler that is hardly used will pay very little and a small family run-about that does many more miles will end up paying more pollution tax as more fuel is bought. Surely this is more equitable? "

"I think it is awful that you are punishing some of us who rely on our 4 wheel drives to get us through the day as we live in rural areas. Without my old toyota 4 by 4- i certainly cannot afford a new one by any stretch of the imagination- we would be trapped in bad weather or snow. I have a very poorly child who has regular hospital visits and who would probably have not been with us now were it not for my truck getting us through bad weather conditions to get him to our nearest hospital. Its a disgrace to charge me 185 pounds for my years tax. Why dont you pick on people who use cars they dont actually need not people like me who rely on ours."

"How does £200 on a high co2 producing car balance against £0 for a low co2 producing car when the mileage isn't taken into consideration. Cancel the tax and put it on fuel, that way the tax hits the usage, more miles driven - more tax!!!"

"If you think that raising the price of fuel and tax on cars has got anything to do with the environment, then you must as dumb as the rest of the peasants. If you think that Porsche owners can't afford to run their cars at any price then you should get out a bit more. If you want to do something about the rising numbers of vehicles on the roads then you have to stop parents giving 17 year old children cars as toys. People should learn responsibility and support society before they can pollute."
