Road Tax Bands
The easiest way to pay for your road, or car, tax is to apply online at the DVLA website, simply phone them up
To do so you will need your cars registration details, the V5C Registration Certificate, an MOT certificate if the car is more than 3 years old, and car insurance. Note that if you want to pay your road tax online at the DVLA with a credit card then there is a £2.50 charge. You can buy either a 6 month or a 12 month tax disc online.
When you apply for a road tax disc online or by using the DVLA phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new road tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires.
Road Tax at the Post Office
Alternatively you can pay your car tax at the post office. You have to go into the post office with the correct car information, but you can pay with cash, debit card, travellers cheque, normal cheques or a postal order. The post office does run a savings stamp scheme which at the time of writing (April 2011) are no longer accepted at the post office to pay for road tax, but you can still use them at a local DVLA office.
What if I don't pay my road tax?
The maximum penalty for making a false SORN declarion to avoid paying your road tax is a £5,000 fine and a prison sentence! The starting point for non payment of car tax discs is a £80 fine on top of the bill for a new car tax disc. However the matter can be taken to court where you would face a minimum £1000 fine. In addition your car will be impounded until the matter is settled and could be crushed if you do not pay the fines.
