How to keep yourself safe in bad weather conditions
Winter driving is one of the most hazardous times of year to drive. There are all kinds of road conditions that can make us grip the steering wheel, slow down, and look like we're driving like our grandmother. But, it is very important to know how to drive safely in the winter so that you don't put yourself at risk, your family at risk, and the other drivers around you at risk. Knowing tips to driving safely in the winter is very important to protecting your vehicle and protecting yourself.
Take a Winter Driving Course
One of the best things that you can do to help you drive safely in the winter is to learn how to properly drive in differing weather conditions. A defensive driving course isn't going to cut it, you need something even more heavy duty. There are a few ways to go about this. See if the companies in your area that offer defense driving courses also offer one for hazardous driving. These courses are going to help you with mastering driving in the snow, driving in the dark, and driving on icy roads.
Clear Your Car of Snow and Ice
There are also many helpful tips that will ensure that you are driving safely during the hazardous conditions of the winter. One of the most important things that people neglect is making sure that their car is free of debris and snow. When it is cold, a lot of people hate heading out to scrape the car, but you need to, this is crucial. You not only want to be sure that you can see out of all the windows and that they are ice and snow free, but that you also have cleared off your side view mirrors, and wiped down your headlights. If there is snow or ice it all needs to be cleared off of your vehicle, if you have snow and ice covering your headlights, they aren't going to be as bright as you need them to be, if you have snow and ice over your windows, you aren't going to be able to see out of them.
Beware of Stopping Distances when driving in Winter
You also want to be sure that you are driving safely. Dangerous driving conditions call for specific driving tactics. When there is ice on the roads and it is dark, it isn't time to drive like a racecar driver. You want to be sure that you are driving a reasonable speed, where you will be able stop quickly and controlled. You also want to be sure that you are driving at a safe distance from the car in front of you. The three second rule should be extended for bad road conditions, make it more like five or seven seconds so that you have time to stop even if you do slide and not end up in the bumper of the car in front of you. It is also important that you are driving distraction free, you shouldn't stop and grab fast food and you shouldn't be putting on your make up or talking on your phone. Put both hands on the wheel and focus on driving during these times.
Driving in the winter can be difficult and there can be some harsh road conditions that make it even worse. But, there are ways that you can be prepared to drive safely and get from point A to point B with no issue. Make sure that you are comfortable driving in the winter and that you have taken the steps to become a great driver. The more comfortable and prepared that you are for winter driving, the more successful you will be.
