 The construction industry is huge and there are several opportunities for aspiring plasterers. The needs of the plastering industry are for heavily skilled professionals with a high level of commitment as well. The question is: is there any training sessions that aspiring plasterers can take in order to get the required certification? The fact is that there are several courses but the two main qualifications required to pursue a career in plastering are City & Guilds Plastering qualification and the NVQ qualification.

Short-term Plastering Training

There are several short term training courses offered by private institutions across the world. The duration of the course can vary from 5-15 day course and is meant for those who are interested in DIY projects or those who want an insight into the plastering industry in order to choose a career. Some of the tools that will be introduced to plasterers include Steel Floating Trowel, Hawk, Plastic Floating Trowel, Gauging Trowel, Hammer, Straight Edge, Tape Measure, Stanley Knife, Internal Angle Trowel, Tin Snips, and Saw.

Long-term Plastering Training

The long-term training courses will lead to certification.

The long-term training courses can vary from 6 weeks to 14 weeks depending on the institution. At the end of the plastering course, you will receive a Certificate of completion. The plastering training offered in these courses meet the standard requirements of City & Guilds as well as National vocational qualifications (NVQ). Most of the plasterer's qualification courses include 7 mandatory Units as well as 2 optional Units that can be chosen from 8-10 units offered by different institutions.

The 7 mandatory units remain the same for future plasterers across the world and include:

The optional units can include everything from learning how to fix floor tiles to applying a textured finish, re-plastering, plain rendering, application of Tyrolean hand machine finish, fixing bell cast bead, and much more.

You can even choose a 10 day to 8-week NVQ plastering course. The NVQ plastering course also requires clearing 7 mandatory Units as well as 2 optional Units in order to become qualified plasterers.

The Diploma Plastering Course

The Diploma training for plasterers should be approved by City & Guilds

The diploma course in plastering is for all those who want to pursue a career in plastering or want to be plasterers in the future. It will be easier to opt for this course if you have successfully cleared a short-term plastering course although this is not a mandatory requirement. The diploma course completion or results will be based on performance in the following:

The total duration of the diploma course is 8-weeks and there are around 23 units. You will need to clear all of them to become a qualified plasterer.

Some of the other important trainings for plasterers include the 3 week City and Guilds accreditation, 5-day City and Guilds accreditation in rendering, 5-day dry lining of interior systems for NVQ assessment, 2-day patch plastering training, 3-day Venetian plastering training using environmentally friendly materials, and 10-day specialists plastering training.
