Pediatric Dentist
Dental care for young children can be much different than dental care for adults. While most of the procedures are the same, the way they are handled is different. This is because young children are much more fragile that adults. Going to the dentist can be a very scary experience for a young child.
A good pediatric dentist can make all the difference in the world. In a pediatric dental office you will find that there are many things that will take the child's mind off of the procedure. This includes books, toys and video games. In many offices everything from the sinks to the chairs are child sized.
So, how do you go about finding a pediatric dentist?
Well the first thing you should do is contact your friends and family and ask for a recommendation. If you don't have any luck there you might want to try speaking with the mother or father of one of your child's playmates. They might be able to tell you who they take their children to.
If you don't have any luck with that try looking in a directory for pediatric dentists. Once you find a few you should think of the questions you want to ask them. It is important that you write these questions down so that you will remember them.
Start by calling the offices and setting up an appointment for a consultation. A consultation will give you and your child a chance to meet with the dentist. It will also give you the opportunity to ask any questions that you many have.
At the Pediatric Dentist
While you are there you will want to take into account your child's reaction to the dentist and his staff. Some questions you may ask yourself are: Did your child seem to be comfortable with the dentist? How did the dental staff treat you and your child? Was the dental office clean and child friendly?
Take notes while you are at the office, especially if you are interviewing several pediatric dentists. This way you will be able to look back and remember what you liked best about each dentist. You will also be able to recall who your child seemed the fondest of.
Once you have settled on a dentist make an appointment for your child. It is best that you don't tell your child about this appointment until right before. This will help keep your child from becoming stressed out about the idea of going to the dentist. In most cases children seem to be more fearful of the dentist if they have had a long time to become anxious about it.
When it is time for your child's appointment you might want to take a comfort item for them. Try a well loved blanket or stuffed animal. Make sure that you don't lie to your child about what it going to happen. Tell them gently what the dentist will be doing to their teeth. You don't have to be extremely graphic about this, but lying to them will only build distrust if you need to take them back to the dentist.
Over all a good pediatric dentist should be able to calm and sooth your child. Most of the time they will make sure the child is relaxed before they begin the procedure. Sometimes this involves giving the child a twilight medication to make them a bit sleepy during the procedure. The medication is perfectly safe, just be sure to let your dentist know if your child is allergic to anything.
If you do your research you should be able to find the perfect pediatric dentist for your child. Just remember, you shouldn't be afraid to ask lots of questions. Taking the time to do so will help to ensure that your child has a good experience with the dentist.
