General method on teeth whitening
Many years ago the only way to clean and whiten your teeth was to use peroxide and baking soda. In today’s society teeth whitening has become a normal occurrence. There are a number of teeth whitening methods on the market today. Some of them are over the counter such as whitening toothpastes and whitening strips. There are also other methods of whitening that you can get from your dentist. These include bleaching trays, chair side whitening and laser teeth whitening.
Different Methods for Whitening Your Teeth
This article will explain how each method will work. It will help you decided if tooth whitening is right for you. It will also help you to decide which method you should use.
There are many different toothpastes on the market especially designed for whitening your teeth. These toothpastes are designed to remove stains from your teeth and don’t actually do much to whiten your teeth. You may notice that your teeth appear cleaner, but they don’t actually penetrate far enough into the tooth to make it appear lighter if they have already become stained.
Whitening strips are becoming increasingly popular. These strips contain a solution of hydrogen peroxide. This is a very mild solution of about 4%. The strips are made to use daily for a week. They cover the outside of your teeth and are worn from 30 minutes to one hour at a time depending on the brand you choose. These strips tend to deliver results, whitening the teeth 1-3 shades in some brands. This is a good option for some people, however to maintain results the process may have to be repeated many times. This is because the stains may reappear quickly on your teeth is you smoke or drink a lot of dark colored beverages such as cola, tea and coffee.
You can get your dentist to make you a set a bleaching trays. This is done by taking an impression of your teeth and making a model of them. They use the model to make a set of soft plastic trays that will contour to your teeth. The dentist will give you a hydrogen peroxide bleach solution to put in the trays. This solution is a higher grade than that which you get from whitening strip. It is usually 10-15% bleach. These trays will be worn once a week for a couple hours at a time until the desired shade is achieved. While having a set of these trays made by your dentist is more expensive, this is a good option if you have tough stains on your teeth. The results also seem to last longer.
Chair Side Whitening
Chair side whitening is very similar to bleaching trays, but this procedure is done in the dentists. The hydrogen peroxide solution used in the dentists can be up to 35%. This method is much more expensive but will leave your teeth 4-6 shades lighter in just one visit.
Laser whitening is also done inside a dental practice. This is a fairly new procedure that has proven to have very good results. Many people think that this procedure is actually done with a laser, but there is currently no such thing as a laser that whitens teeth. This is actually done by using translucent gel bleach on the teeth that is activated by a bright light. In most cases this procedure is done in one visit.
