The different types of dental braces
When some people think of braces they think of the big silver smile that was so common when braces were first made popular. Braces have changed dramatically over the years and now there are many different types of braces to choose from. Some of these include traditional stainless steel braces, gold braces, ceramic braces and invisible braces.
Traditional Braces
Traditional stainless steel and gold braces are smaller now days they take up less space in the mouth. The corners are rounded on the brackets to provide for maximum comfort. Other than cosmetic there is no difference between gold and stainless steel braces. These types of braces use a band, bracket and wire system, where the bands are placed on the back molars and a small bracket is places on each tooth. Then a stainless steel or nickel titanium wire runs from molar to molar. The wire is locked into the brackets using rubber ties or with a very thin piece of stainless steel. The rubber ties they come in a verity of bright colors which can be fun for young children, however they also come in clear and silver to match the braces for those that prefer something less noticeable. Stainless steel braces tend to be the most economically friendly type. They also tend to hold up very well, making them a great option for young children in the early stages of orthodontic treatment.
Ceramic Braces
Clear ceramic braces are a nice option for those that need the advantages of having full braces, but prefer something less noticeable. This type of braces uses as band and bracket system just as the gold and stainless steel braces do. A stainless steel band is usually placed around the back molar where it is not noticeable and a clear bracket is placed on each tooth. A wire is then placed to move the teeth. This wire is usually stainless steel or nickel titanium, however clear wires are available as well. The wire is most often secured by clear rubber ties to hold it in place. The ceramic brackets tend to be larger than traditional stainless steel brackets and therefore take up more space in the mouth. They are more easily chipped as they are ceramic. It is recommended that these brackets be used on responsible teens and adults, that will carefully follow the instructions they are given.
Invisible Braces
Recently invisible braces have become popular. Invisible braces are a very good option for adults that would like to straighten out their teeth, but prefer to do it discreetly a lot of work goes into making invisible braces. Special photos are taken of the teeth and elaborate models are made. From these models they are able to make several sets of plastic aligners. Invisible braces use an anchor system that is attached directly to the teeth with a tooth colored composite. Then the patient is given a set of plastic aligners that are to be worn consistently by the patient. The patient typically moves to a new set of aligners every two to three weeks. These aligners are removable and are taken out to eat and brush the teeth. This type of braces can be much more expensive than traditional or even clear braces. There are still studies being conducted for the use of invisible braces in teens.
