Canoes, Kayaks and there uses

Kayaking, Canoeing, what boat to use and why

[hn]Types of canoes and their uses[ehn]

  • Slalom Kayaks
  • These are generally what we call closed cockpit kayak. A spray deck is worn by the paddler and then put around the cockpit when sat in the boat, this stops the water coming into the kayak. Slalom boats are on average X feet long and very shallow. This design helps to make them turn quickly around the slalom poles. Slalom is normally a competitive sport rather than paddling for fun, altough as a teenager I spent many hours just playing around on white water and paddling in and out of slalom gates.

  • White water play boats
  • In my experience one of the most enjoyable types of kayaking. This is also the one that requires the most skill, especially if you want to be good and be a bit of a show off (not that I was). Play boats allow you to perform tricks that will wow the audience and passers by.

  • Open canadian canoes
  • Canadian canoes are generally large open cockpit boats, used on both white water and flat water; great for touring and carrying large amounts of gear due to the large carrying capacity.

  • Sea kayaks
  • K1 racing kayaks
  • Recreational and Touring
  • Sit on tops
  • Inflatables
