Petrol Culture

Influence of petrol stations on culture

The rising demand of vehicles during the past couple of decades has lead to increased number of petrol pumps all over the world. Although the number of operating petrol pumps has declined now, yet it is greater than what is was 3 decades ago.

Petrol pumps and services stations have become an important aspect of our lives. Not a single day goes without passing by a service station to fuel up tanks and getting some snacks to much an and drinks to cool down the thirst. This concept has been clearly adopted and rose to fame especially in Hollywood movies and dramas. The influence of petrol pumps can now be witnessed in many movies/dramas falling in the genre of Action, Sports, Horror, and even comedy. Some of the most notable movies depicting service stations are:

Above are some of the most popular movies showing strong influence of petrol pumps in different ways. Usually car racing genre movies depict fuelling cars from petrol station along with in-house petrol pumps. Action oriented movies like Assassins, Specialist, and Transporter have scenes of petrol pumps and vehicle explosions. One such movie named The Transporter (2001) shows a scene where the leading actor gets out of his car to buy some snacks on the snack shop present at the petrol pump forecourt. After purchasing his snacks, he is on his way back to the car when his Audi gets exploded near the petrol pump.

Attack the Gas station and its next movie in series are comedy Korean movies that had the entire stores centered around the petrol station. As the title suggests, the movie is based completely on just one scene; gas station. A group of Korean youth gangsters is seen attacking the petrol pump and looting one of a Seoul fuel station owner. The main purpose of the movie is still unknown, but a strong retaliation of gas station employees was seen resulting in furious fist fights with the gang members.

The influence of petrol stations is not just limited to mainstream Hollywood movies, but also extends to the music industry where some celebrities have even installed service stations at their big mansions in order to save time and effort on fuelling up. Akon, a leading African American singer is the best example of this. He has got a fuel station at his own mansion to pump up all of his sports and luxury cars.

The influence of petrol stations on popular culture has been discussed above. However all leading oil companies are using unique designs and outstanding services at their patrol pumps in order to strike a strong brand impression upon customers. Every time you see a yellow streak on the top four sides covering the petrol pump with a Shell emblem on the top, you instantly recognize it's a Shell operated service station. Similarly when you see yellow and green, you immediately recall your memory to notice it's a BP operated petrol pump.

etrol pumps are now being designed as perhaps the most important weapon of marketing by various oil companies of the world in hopes to bring a distinction in branding. This has been a very successful method of branding since petrol pumps are the only visible way to strike quality impression making loyal and sincere customers as bloodline for businesses.
