The smell of homemade bread and the taste of fresh bread from the oven are things that most people love, but the process of making bread at home can be rather off-putting.

However, the whole process can be made easier by the use of an electric breadmaker. These electric devices are able to mix, knead and bake from 1 to 2lb loaves in just three hours and have a time delay mechanism. They can cost from £40 to £90. The more expensive the model the more the baking options the machine has and the more ‘loaf-like' the bread baked - most machines make a tower loaf rather than the traditional horizontal shape. As well as baking bread, machines are also able to make jam, mix the dough for ciabatta bread, rolls and cakes.

For any baking or dough-making in a breadmaker, it is very important to carefully measure out the ingredients. All breadmakers come with a plastic cup, teaspoon and tablespoon which make this process much easier and more reliable. It is best to have all the ingredients at room temperature to ensure that your bread is raised properly.

Bread machines also have a ‘fast-bake' setting which allows bread to be made in approximately half the time. However, as you may image, this will require more yeast and will produce a less raised loaf.

Some machines come with windows so you can see how your bread is baking and whether the dough you are making is rising properly, or is of the right consistency. With most machines, you can open the lid and add more water or flour should emergencies measures need to be put into action at the start of a baking sequence.

All breadmakers come with a booklet of recipes that you can follow and which have been tested to ensure you end up with the best result. It is important to always add the ingredients in the order that they are listed in the recipe and to ensure that the sugar and yeast do not mix until you are ready to start the baking programme otherwise, the yeast will age prematurely and not cause your bread to rise as much as it could do.

Breadmakers also allow you to pre-measure the ingredients into your machine and bake them at a later time; up to 13 hours later allowing you to have fresh bread in the morning or when you arrive home from work.

Breadmaking is made easier by the versatility and simplicity of electic breadmakers, allow fresh, organic breads to be baked fresh in your home.
