Laying Patio

Laying a Patio

Laying a patio can serve a multitude of purposes for you and your family for many years to come.  Whether you are looking for an area to entertain, or just have a place to add to the value of your existing property.  You would be amazed by the beauty that can enhance the look of your backyard space.

There are a wide variety of options that you can choose from to create the look that will best suit your current lifestyle when you are laying a patio.  Most contractors prefer to use a selection of flat textured stones that are usually either slate or limestone.  The designs can be very detailed as well, with the colors of the stones and the shape of the stones.  You can choose to use one particular shape of stone, or you can choose to give your patio a look that is pieced together.  By using a group of different shapes, to create this pieced together look, you will be able to have a patio that is all your own.

Laying a Patio

When you are laying a patio, most stones tend to come in a square shape, or in the shape of a circle.  Because the stones palettes are sturdy, you can use a special type of saw, to cut the stones into just about any shape that you desire to.  This will give the design of the patio that homely feel.  The tough sandstones tend to hold up better, and give you a more textured look to the patio.  The stones that are typically used in a project like this, more often times than not, lay the same way that tile would lay.  Because of the weight of the stones however, it is highly recommended that you enlist the help of a friend, when you are laying a patio.   It is always better to not try to accomplish this type of project alone.

Just in the case that you do not want to do the job yourself, you can always find a contractor to do it for you.  A good professional will always come out to your home, and quote you a fair market value price for your project.   Laying a patio can be one of the easiest and cost effective ways to improve your home.  On average you can get a patio built for only a few hundred dollars.  It will depend on the size of the patio that you are wanting, and the detail of the craftsmanship.  The more eccentric the design the more time that it will take to complete the job.  We all know that time is money in business.  Though most contractors do not charge by the hour, but by the job, they still consider their time as especially valuable.

It is important to first consider what the price is that you are willing to spend.   After you have a specific price point in mind, then try to come up with a design for the laying of a patio, which will solve your wants and your needs.  This is a very important to your pending project because you will be the one that has to live with the job that is done.   When you are ready to begin the job, the first step is to prepare the foundation.  You do not want to put a patio on the top of a sink hole, so it is a good idea to have the foundation that the patio is going to be built on checked prior to the start of the building process.

There are selections of skilled people that perform this type of soil testing everyday for a living.  Have the drillers come out to your home and check the foundation out for you, before you start laying a patio.  It will be money that is well spent.  It is better for the homeowner to be aware that there is a problem now, than to find it out the hard way later.  You want your investment that you are making to be sound and secure for many years to come.  After you are sure that the ground underneath is stable, you can start by smoothing out the foundation.  This process should not take more than a day on average.

When the soil is clear of any harsh materials then you are free to proceed.  In the case of laying a patio that is made of stone or brick, their will be a thin layer of mortar that is smeared onto the area of soil.  This causes the stone or brick to set into place.  You will want the stones or brick to be placed the way that you want them, before the mortar dries.  Once the substance is dry, you can not change the placement of the materials.

If the area where the patio is will have a high volume of traffic through it, then I would suggest that you use a more stable stone such as limestone, or even maybe garnet, that is more likely to hold up longer.   Climate also plays a big role in the setting up of the particular stone.  The mortar is much more likely to dry faster in the hotter climates, than that which is laid in the cooler climates.

For this reason alone, it would be a much better plan to do laying a patio, in the winter time if you live in the south or in a tropical climate.  It is the opinion of many experts in their field that you should think out the execution of any home improvement project thoroughly, before you start on the job.  You should approach the job with care and always consult with someone in the know.

Laying a patio can provide you with a beautiful space that is both classy and reflects the individual style that you are all about when the job is done correctly.  Make sure that there are no gaps in the foundation after the stones are laid.  Sometimes this can happen and the job will look unfinished.  It is a problem that does happen, but it is also one that has a very easy remedy.  All you will have to do is fill the gaps in with some of the extra mortar that you probably will have left anyway.   After the completion of this final step, you should be left with a wonderful new patio of your very own.
