What is an Outdoor Kitchen?
More and more of today's homeowners are spending their renovation budget on beautifying their outdoor living spaces. Garden and patio renovations not only make the outdoor area a pleasant place for the family to spend time and to entertain guests, but upgrading the outdoor area increases its value for buyers.
One way to enhance the outdoor living area of a home is the beautiful and practical addition of an outdoor kitchen.
What is an Outdoor Kitchen?
The idea behind an outdoor kitchen is to ensure you have everything you need to create, serve, and enjoy a meal, available to you outside. This includes not just a grill, but also cabinets, a sink, a refrigerator and freezer, a bar, a seating area, patio heating, and any other elements that you might desire to entertain your guests or your family, without traipsing in and out of the house. Creating an outdoor kitchen is more complicated than simply adding a built-in grill to your garden or patio, but the end results are stunning.
How to Get Your Own Outdoor Kitchen
If you'd like to enjoy the beauty and luxury of an outdoor kitchen in your home, you have three choices: if you are handy, you can build one yourself. Otherwise, you can contract with a company to custom design your ideal entertaining space. Or thirdly, you can purchase an outdoor kitchen from a company that offers modular outdoor kitchen design elements, so you can put together the kitchen that is ideal for your outdoor living space simply and easily.
The Advantages of an Outdoor Kitchen
Having your own outdoor kitchen greatly increases the available size of your home. If you've ever wanted to hold larger parties than your home can handle, transforming your yard into an entertainment area is a great solution. And creating an outdoor kitchen will encourage you to spend more time outdoors as well. Instead of ignoring your garden or patio space, you could transform it into one of the most enjoyable parts of your home, and enjoy the health and stress-relieving benefits of fresh air and a gorgeous environment.
An outdoor kitchen gives you the freedom to prepare salads and other side dishes in the one preparation area. Clean up is easy because the sink is included in the design. All the ingredients and drinks are readily available as the refrigerator and freezer are on hand.
Is an outdoor kitchen right for you?
An outdoor kitchen can be an expensive piece of equipment so you will need to know if it is right for you. Consider the following before buying an outdoor kitchen:
- Do you already spend a lot of your time outside cooking on your bbq? If so then it is likely that you will do the same with an outdoor kitchen.
- How big is your deck or patio? - Outdoor kitchens can be quite large so ensure you have enough space to incorporate the kitchen plus tables and chairs, patio heaters and anything else that you will need to entertain you and your guests.
- You need to allow a reasonable sized workspace on either side of the grill and burners, adequate space around chairs and tables to allow free movement in high traffic areas while making sure that tables and chairs are well away from stairs.
- If you are incorporating a counter to eat at, then make sure there is adequate room for the stools and plenty of legroom. There also needs to be ample area for those not involved with the cooking process to sit or stand around and socialize.
- If you don't plan to wash the dishes outside then you only need to connect cold water to the sink by way of a hose, otherwise you will need to factor the cost of plumbing into the design.
- Will you want a fixed or movable kitchen? If movable then you will need additional space to store your outdoor kitchen when not in use.
