Reducing your Heating Bill

Top tips to keep your house warmer this winter

The worst part of the winter is paying the heating bill.  Every month in the winter, it gets worse and worse.  There are so many people that pray for spring so that they can stop paying an astronomical heating bill and get what they need without having to set the thermostat at 70 degrees.  The good news is, that there is hope, there are ways that you can reduce your heating bill and not have to stress about having such a large heating bill.  Look for ways that you can save money in the winter so that you don't have to try to figure out how you are going to afford to pay that over the top heating bill.

The worst part about winter is when you decide that you want to try to reduce your heating bill and you do it the easiest way that you know, that is just turning down the thermostat.  Then, instead of being warm, you have everyone running around the house in sweaters, pants, slippers, hats, and gloves, which is just miserable.  When its winter, you want to be warm, you want to walk into your house and know that it is going to be comfortable and that you aren't going to have to wear your winter gear on the inside too.  Don't be the person with a cold all winter because your house is too cold, find ways to reduce your heating bill without reducing your comfort level.

Home Insulation to reduce heating bill

The best way that you can reduce your heating bill is to actually insulate your house, there are many different ways to do this and there are businesses that specialise in it. What they will do is actually come through your house, see where there are heat inefficiencies and fix them.  They will do this through insulation and other methods, but they will definitely get your house up to speed when it comes to holding heat or cold for that matter.  This will cost some money, but it may be well worth it with the difference that they will be able to see you in your energy bill.  Most of these companies will be able to tell you what the difference in your heating will be with an approximate estimate.

Reduce heating bill by blocking out drafts

Otherwise, there are other things that you can do that will lower your heating bill, they may not make the biggest difference, but they will help.  With this, you will want to look for the little things that will help you control your heating bills.  So, one of the first things that you can do is check the windows.  There are a lot of windows that can be drafty or need to be replaced.  You need to have your windows at least double paned because otherwise, they tend to be drafty.  There are also draft dodgers that you can get for your windows.  These will go under a door where the crack is or they will go where a window may be drafty, they are a really quick and easy way that you will be able to block up some of the drafts that will instantly help improve the heating situation in your home.

Service your boiler to reduce bills

Another simple solution is that you need to make sure that your furnace is clean.  It is very important that the furnace is clean.  So, you'll want to make sure that you have regular cleanings done on the furnace and have them scheduled when you need to have them done.  You will need to make sure that you change the filter.  Just like your dryer the lint filter needs to get cleaned out, the furnace needs the same thing, so it is important that you clean out the filter so that the furnace can be used to its maximum potential.

There are all kinds of ways that you can reduce your energy bill by doing little things to make it more energy efficient, or by doing an overhaul on your house.  It is really up to you how you choose to do it, but you'll be surprised at even how big of a difference something small like this can do.  Make sure that your house has the best insulation and draft prevention that you can find so that you have a house that stays toasty for a low price all year round.
