Buying a Vacuum Cleaner
Buying a new vacuum cleaner isn't exactly the most exciting of jobs, but it is essential to get the right one in order to be able to keep your house clean.
The Problem with our Hoover
We already possess a vacuum cleaner (hoover), it is an old Dyson that has been repaired a few times. Dyson have a pretty good name in the world of vacuum cleaners, and so we figured this second hand item should be pretty good. However it was a classic example of something that really didn't suit our needs!
We have a small house, a small house with lots of wooden flooring. Infact, with a tiled kitchen, a cheap flooring in the conservatory and wooden flooring in the living room and the hallway, there really was no need for a vacuum cleaner downstairs. Just a decent broom and a dustpan and brush.
Upstairs is much smaller, but is all carpeted, and so needs to be hovered properly. The problem with the Dyson was that is was just too BIG for all the fiddly little spaces! You work your way up the stairs one at a time lugging this huge vacuum cleaner with you, trying to get the rotating brush head to go over each step. Then there is a small landing which is only just big enough to turn the hoover around in, and then into equally small bedrooms and bathroom. Sure the Dyson vacuum cleaner did a good job on the open carpet areas, but there was just no way of getting into all the little nooks and crannies.
What type of Vacuum Cleaner to get?
This problem is not unique to Dyson, all upright vacuum cleaners have this problem, they can be just too big!
Here is an excellent link that sums it up!

The link talks about the upright systems being big and bulky, and also talks about cylinder and hand held vacuum cleaners. We felt that a hand held hoover would be ideal for the stairs, but probably wouldn't be good enough to sort out the rest of the upstairs.
So we were after a good cylinder, and a bagless one at that, basically only to avoid running out of bags when we really need them. We were also after a good high rated system so that it had a good chance of sucking well, also a brand name would be good, just because some of the cheaper less well known vacuum cleaners brands may have performance issues
The Choice of Vacuum Cleaner
In the end, the choice was really easy! As Argos had a half rpice sale on a particular Vax Vacuum cleaner. It was a bagless, cylinder vacuum, with a 1800 Watt motor in it. It wasn't quite as small and light as I had hoped for, but it certainly makes vacuuming those stairs a lot easier.
