The average waiting time on the NHS is quoted as being 18weeks. However, this can obviously be increased or decreased dependent on the type of illness the person may have. Hip and knee replacements are usually performed within this time, but ailments such as varicose veins may take longer (20+weeks), especially if the reason is more aesthetic rather than to alleviate pain - though, even if aesthetic, the temptation is to state there is pain to avoid being pushed down the waiting list or having to pay for private treatment (cost being around £2600). Opting for privately funded knee and hip replacements can cost up to £9500 and £7400, respectively.

Ailments that reduce people's quality of life and prevent them for taking part in everyday activities and which cause daily pain and discomfort are most likely to be treated within the four and a half month waiting time. Cosmetic procedures though, such as breast augmentations and abdominal procedures (tummy tuck) are less likely to be treated and for which One would have to wait a very long time (more than a year). Going privately would cost £4500 for both these types of operation.

If you have problems with painful haemorrhoids these will be treated on the NHS, but again, the waiting times can be up to 18 weeks provided no emergency surgeries are required. The same applies to hernia operations which under the NHS are only carried out if the patient is suffering from severe discomfort and there is a change of strangulation. As with any operation, the longer you can manage without surgery, the safer and better it is for you.

The tables below show the average costs of having treatment privately for various procedures. As stated at the top, the NHS aims to carry out treatment without 18weeks, but as many have experienced, this may not happen and your only option maybe to seek private treatment or indeed, travel abroad to receive faster treatment at a lower price than even private treatment can provide here in the UK.
