Welcome to the Whatprice Newsletter

The Whatprice website was originally conceived as a site where people could review and submit pricing information on all manner of services, from plumbing call out fees to the cost of having a wisdom tooth removed. To start off with we performed our own searches and surveys. As the site has grown and become more popular we have had a huge amounts of feedback from the public, however this feedback is often overwhelming and we have struggled to keep up with the amount of data being sent to us.

Therefore we are now slowly moving over to a database driven system which will allow the information to be collated far more easily, and displayed in a far more coherent manner. We are testing out several different ways of displaying the data and would love your feedback!

Please take a look at www.whatprice.co.uk/prices/building.php for building services, www.whatprice.co.uk/prices/electrician.php for electrician prices and http://www.whatprice.co.uk/utility/utility-bills.php for your utility bills. We would be interested to hear any comments you have on these pages, both about the way the data is displayed and the on the feedback forms that we have supplied. Please email webmaster@whatprice.co.uk and of course we would be grateful if you could fill out the pages with any pricing information that you may have.

Petrol Prices

We have been experimenting with Petrol Pricing information for some time now. We think that the www.whatprice.co.uk/car/petrol-prices.php page gives a good overview of the price of petrol in the UK, and goes some way to looking at regional variations. However we want to go further!

A new page (www.whatprice.co.uk/car/display-retailer-fuel-comparison.php) allows you to look at historic data on different petrol retailers, just select the company's of interest and click "update graph". From our information Asda seems to offer the cheapest petrol, however in recent month the gap between all the retailers has narrowed so much that the difference between them is negligible.

New Petrol Pricing Website Preview

The petrol retailer information may be interesting, but again we still want to go further. Therefore we are busy working on a completely new Petrol Pricing website. It isn't finished yet, but we wanted to give our subscribers a sneak preview!

Take a sneaky look at www.whatgas.com/main2.aspx.

There you will see a map of the UK and a box to type in your postcode. Try your home address and have a look at the new map that appears. If you click on any of the petrol stations you will get pricing and other information. We ask that you submit pricing information for any forecourts that you visit regularly as the system relies on the public to obtain the correct prices.

We are aware that there are some petrol stations listed that have now closed down, and that there are some that are missing. We are working on a feedback system which will allow people to submit a "Station Error" report to help us improve the accuracy of our information.

If you have any comments on this new website then please email as at webmaster@whatprice.co.uk, your feedback is vital to producing reliable data

Secret Shopper

At Whatprice-central we have been very busy performing some 'secret shopper' services to help you make the right decisions when you have your consumer hat on, this week we took a look at Car Insurance websites.

So what is the cheapest online car insurance quote? How long does it take to get this quote. What are the differences between the different insurance policies that are on offer? Secret Shopper takes a look at a load of car insurance websites so that you don't have to. We discover that there is a huge difference between the insurance quotes that we found, however this is usually (but not always) due to the level of cover that is on offer. Once you get to the more 'basic' insurance policies then most of the online insurance firms offer similar prices. Unsurprisingly the 'traditional' insurance firms seem to offer more expensive policies and offer websites that are difficult and confusing to use. This contrasts with the newer internet only sites that are easy to use, have clear descriptions of their policies, and cheaper prices! http://www.whatprice.co.uk/shopper/car-insurance.html

Do it Yourself Kitchen

There is nothing like a bit of personal experience to help write a DIY guide, so I have included an article which describes my personal experience of installing a new kitchen. It took a couple of weekends, and the house was a complete mess whilst doing it, but it was worthwhile in the end and saved a fortune on kitchen fitters. My advice is to take your time over these things and make sure you are well prepared with the right tools for the job.

If you have any DIY experiences that you would like to share with us then please feel free to email. We are happy to publish any helpful advice or information that you may have. It doesn’t have to be a DIY guide, it can even be a “DIY disaster” report if things went horribly wrong!
