Keeping Your Dog Happy On Holiday

Having a happy holiday with your dog

If you're going on holiday in your home country, quite often you can take your dog with you.  There are plenty of dog friendly places to stay which means that both you and your pooch can enjoy a chilled out vacation.  Some dogs love a change of scenery and cope well with a change in their routine.  However for some dogs, holidays can be a little stressful so it is important to make sure you take precautions to keep your dog happy.

Stick to your dogs routine

When on holiday, your normal routine tends to go out the window.  This can leave your dog feeling confused and insecure.  When on holiday, try to ensure that your dogs mealtimes are kept the same, even if this means taking dog food and bowls with you on day trips.  This will stop your dog becoming hungry and will help to relax them.

Take some home comforts

When packing for your holiday, make sure you take some of his toys. Plus, if you can, take his own bed with you. This way he will have a familiar place to sleep, with all his familiar smells.

Don't spoil them

When your on holiday you tend to eat out lots and treat yourself to food you don't normally have.  Owners tend to think that holidays are the time to spoil their dogs in the same way.  Dogs are not like people and a sudden change in diet can cause a severe stomach upset.  Lots of treats may seem like a nice way to spoil your dog but you risk being left with a very sick and unhappy dog instead.

Water

On holiday you will spend most of the day out of your hotel exploring.  While you can stop at a restaurant or café when your thirsty, your dog cant.  On a hot summers day your dog can quickly become dehydrated.  Make sure that you take a large bottle of water and a travel bowl with you whenever you go out.  Offer your dog the chance to drink at regular intervals and if sitting outside, ensure there is somewhere shady for your dog to sit.

Follow our tips and you should have a happy, healthy and chilled out dog on your next holiday.
