A damp proof course is an impermeable barrier that usually sits horizontally at about half a foot above ground level. The barrier could be a plastic sheet or slate. It's purpose is to prevent water from rising up the masonry and onto the internal walls through capillary action. Damp proofing treatments after the initial build of the house are usually either chemical or electrical in nature.
