Apeictomy treatment is required when the area around the root of a tooth has become infected. When this happens the infection can spread from the tooth pulb to the bone, causing the area to become very swollen and sensitive. The Apeictomy procedure removes the bottom part of the tooth root and any surrounded infected bone or pulp tissue, the area that is cleaned out is then filled with a root filling. In order to reach the tooth root during the Apeictomy treatment the dentist will need to cut into a pull back the gum area around the tooth (unler local anesthetic), the tooth root is then drilled and cleaned before the root filling is applied. The gum is then pushed back into place and stitched up. An Apeictomy treatment stops the spread of an infection and is necassary to save the tooth and prevent further complications from the tooth infeection. After the apeictomy treatment there may be a good deal of inflammation around the tooth and gum but this should settled down over time. Occastionally the treated area can become infected again and so regular checkups are required to ensure that the apeictomy procedure achieved its goals
