House rewire costs
The cost of having your house rewired by a professional electrician can vary considerably depending on how many fittings you require, the layout and size of the house and ease of access. Nonetheless, it is of course possible to give some idea of the price range you can expect to pay for a rewire which you can find below for a house, bungalow and flat rewire.
What does a rewire consist of?
Whilst we can provide ballpark figures it’s best to ask for firm quotes from certified electricians experienced in home rewires, they’ll have the correct tools and knowledge to complete the job with the least amount of disruption. A survey will be carried out and your quotation will take into account many factors, which will consist of:
- Type and location of new consumer unit
- How many sockets, locations and types of fittings (i.e. standard white plastic or more expensive metal finishes).
- How many lights and light switches, locations and types of fittings
- What additional items you require such as:
- Outside lights
- Smoke detectors
- Bathroom fans
- Kitchen extractors
- Showers
- Pumps
- Central heating circuits
- Shaver points
- Burglar alarms
- Certifications
One of the biggest considerations of a rewire is the ease of access to floor and ceiling voids and location of sockets and switches etc.. The bulk of the wiring will be hidden in the floor and ceiling but where it runs up and down to new switches and sockets it will need hiding. This can be done relatively cheaply using surface mounted trunking but it doesn’t look the best, ideally you want the wires buried in the walls. This entails chasing out the runs, laying the wires then filling and plastering ready for decoration. With this in mind a rewire is best done in an empty house with clear access for the electricians, and will ultimately be a faster job and cost less as a result.
