A very straightforward car insurance quote process. Each quote taking about 4 minutes. The little "I" icons for information brings up all the information for that specific term in a box down the side. It is worth noting that (on the second quote) a guaranteed hire car will only cost a further GBP25, but to protect your no claims discount will cost a further GBP60. The next screen takes you to the breakdown cover. There are a range of different ones from GBP36-125 (using the second quote's information). Excesses could be reduced by paying a higher premium. These prices were exclusive internet only ones, and need to be purchased online. Underwritten by Direct Line.
Also a very straightforward car insurance quote process. The layout is practically the same as for the Privilege website. Each quote took about 4 minutes, and they use the same "I" icons for information. The prices were different however! The range of breakdown cover (using the first quotes information) was from GBP50-153, it was the same as for Privilege using the second quotes information. A guaranteed hire car will cost only an additional GBP15 on the policy. Excesses could also be reduced by paying a higher premium. These prices were exclusive to purchasing online, with a 10% discount applied. The homepage also offers further discount if you insure a second car.
Another easy to use car insurance quote system in very similar style to the previous two. This does not offer the choice of pricing in a quaranteed car hire, however some of their higher breakdown covers do offer this. The breakdown cover ranged from GBP45-116 for the first quote and GBP34-94 for the second. Protected no claims was automatically calculated into the second quote, by taking this out the saving is GBP67. There is a 10% saving by purchasing online which is already calculated in. Underwritten by Churchill Insurance.
Practically the same as the others for the quote system. The home page covered a brief outline of their policy which I found convenient - and you could also get a discount off buying a Churchill dog with the wobbly head, which I found amusing!! The online price is discounted by 10% and this is already calculated in. The breakdown cover ranged from GBP41-133 for the first quote and GBP32-111 for the second one. No guarantee of car hire was costed in, but some of the higher breakdown covers included this.
At last a site with a different car insurance quote system, however it did take about 4-5 minutes for each quote even thought the home page said it would only take 2mins. For the first quote, a screen came up that Esure were unable to cover so they redirected the information to their sister site First Alternative, from there the quote process progressed, but came up with an extremely expensive quote even with the 10% online discount! There was no mention of compulsory excess, and they offered breakdown cover from GBP37-79. The second quote was done by the Esure site, but no mention of compulsory excess. The breakdown cover was from GBP37-100. Overall an adequate website, however a lot of the policy information could not be accessed during the quote period - this was however available from the home page. Free courtesy car whilst yours is being repaired by one of their recommended repairers. .
Similar car insurance quote system to Esure, however a bit faster at giving the quotes, about 3 minutes. Breakdown cover is offered, however no range of prices is shown, you just have to select which one you want and your quote is recalculated. There is no mention of what the compulsory excess is, however the policy details are available from clicking on a box at the side of the quote during most of the process. This site also is giving a 10% online discount, and also offers a courtesy car whilst your is being repaired by one of their recommended repairers. Underwritten by UK Insurance Ltd.
A very quick and easy site to use. Each car insurance quote took about 2-3minutes. Simple to read, with policy terms in box on the side. Temporary replacement car is offered for about GBP16 extra, however there is no ready information about this for me to see it's conditions. Breakdown cover ranges from GBP45-134 for the first quote and GBP35-115 for the second. The policy is underwritten by UK Insurance Ltd. The home page offers a Tesco GBP20 giftcard between 15Feb-30Apr 06 for clubcard members, and also asks if you are a clubcard member at the beginning of the quote. It also shows a comparison chart between Tesco Car insurance and some other companies. There is 10% off for booking online, which is already calculated. Underwritten by UK Insurance Ltd.
Quick and easy insurance quote system, with more detailed questions than some of the others. Not a lot of the information is easy to access though. The policy cover and wording are available through a link. No mention of any other excesses than the one shown on the quote page. Legal Protection was not mentioned. Roadside assistance is available but no range of prices are shown, you need to select the one you are interested in to get a recalculation on your premium. Underwritten by Zurich Insurance Company.
The AA searches through 20 major insurers to come up with the best policy for you. They offer a 15% online discount and if you are a member you could possibly get a further discount by entering your membership number. Each car insurance quote took about 4-5minutes. The quote system was poorly designed as you needed to freetext your employment details, which the system didn't recognize and took you to another page to verify your information in the format they used! The website came up with the cheapest quote so far for the second quote, however not for the first. There wasn't a lot of information about the policy, and I couldn't see who the policy was with. Legal protection and breakdown cover was not mentioned.
This site, like the AA one, searches through up to 30 major insurers to find the best price. Each car insurance quote took about 5 minutes plus - I found it quite lengthy, and as with the AA one I had to repeat the information on employment as my freetext didn't match the systems! Neither of the quotes were the cheapest out of all that I have researched. This site did however tell you who the insurer was. The first quote being with Provident and the second with Zurich. To purchase the insurance you need to call Budget and quote your reference number. The home page gives a brief summary of what you can get with Budget insurance including a courtesy car.
Car Insurance Costs Summary
Wow! As you can see there is a wide variance between the quotes, especially for the first one. The difference between the highest and lowest for the first quote was a whopping GBP574 per year!! The difference between the second quote, whilst not as great, was still GBP145, which adds up to a lot over the years. Each site has it's pros and cons, the easiest sites to use were Privilege and Direct Line, as far as entering the information into the quote page and accessing the policy information and what they offer. Direct Line happened to quote the cheapest for the first quote, and each were middle of the road in cost for the second. As with all insurances, you will need to thoroughly read the policy conditions to see and compare all of your inclusions and exclusions.Often a more expensive policy will offer you better insurance protection, buty not always...
