Without a doubt, this years must have gadget has been the iphone. However, if like me you can afford the upfront cost, the best option is to take out a phone contract that offers you an iphone at a much reduced price.

As you can see from the figures, Tesco offers the best deals by far for all models of the iphone. Not only does Tesco offer the most minutes for the monthly cost but the contract only lasts for only 12 months which frees you up to search for an even more competitive sim only tariff after just a year.

If you are worried about upfront costs and are happy to settle for an iphone 3, three companies will offer you an iphone for free on a £35 a month contract. Be wary of these contracts though as you are tied in for 24 months and can end up paying much more than if you just paid a small amount upfront.

If you are looking for the iphone 4 32GB then be prepared to pay at least £159 upfront and with most providers you are locked in for 24 months. This means that over the life of the contract you will end up paying twice the value of the handset.

Whatever tariff you choose, make sure you read the small print and consider insuring your phone to protect yourself in case of theft or damage.
