UK Water Bills

UK Average Water Bills by Number of Bedrooms and Provider

Presented below is a table which gives an idea, based upon a survey of Whatprice visitors, how much you would expect to pay for your water bill or rates depending on the size and type of property you live in. The amount of each bill depends on the usage (in the case of a water meter) and one would expect that a bigger property with more bedrooms would have more occupants and hence have a higher water bill. If you are worried about the cost of your water bill, then you should read our fantastic page on saving water and reducing your bill!

Below is another table which shows, based upon visitor feedback, how the average price of a water rates or bill per bedroom varies with supplier. For example, if a flat has 2 bedrooms and the yearly water bill is £300 then the average price per bedroom would be £150.

Examining around the median of the prices, it can be seen that there is little difference between suppliers with a spread of about £20-40 per room per year. Actual values may vary though depending on the sample size. This data does not take into account usage or current discounts as it is based upon all the data we have. The more data we receive, the better the estimate of the prices. Don't forget, reduce your bills by saving water.

Water Company Resources

Here are some links to the main suppliers of water into our homes. It is possible to switch water supplier but typically you will find less competition in your area than for example for electricity or gas.

Anglian Water - Rates and charges

Wessex Water - Their 2007/2008 rates

Dwr Cymru - A pdf document with their charges for metered and unmetered water supply.

Yorkshire Water - Couldn't find the listing of charges!

Thames Water - God why can't these sites put their charges in a single location. This one is buried in another fairly long pdf, which the link to no longer works..

Severn Trent Water - Again the charges are in 3 pdf files. Maybe its really complicated to work out how much water costs?

Southern Water - I'm beginning to think the water companies are all owned by one super company who provides them with a website template into which you MUST store your charges in a pdf file of no less than 10 pages and bury it within the site?

Unlike the other two utilities there is only one company that I could find as of August 2007 that allows you to compare water companies for best deals and that is

Uswitch - Yes, the one of the TV.

"2 of us living in Severn Trent region on a meter are paying £600 per annum. On the old method of payment - according to rateable vale - my bill would be under £500. Now I find out that my meter taken cannot be taken out as it's against the rules. I feel that I was conned into having a meter on the pretext of saving money to find that I, and everyone else who opted for a meter, are now paying more for their water than those without a meter and who couldn't care less how much water they use. This is grossly unfair and OFWAT should do something about it. "

"I've just had a nill through from UU saying our water bill for the last 7 months is £700!! Does that sound right to anyone else?"

Erin

"I live in the Severn Trent Area, and am on a metered supply, paying around £195/year, in a single-occupancy flat. ST tell that I use an average of 93 litres/day, and they themselves have called me a "very conservative user". My sister lives 2 streets away, with a partner & 2 children, paying £205/year, unmetered, in a 3 bedroom house. As I understand it, the average water consumption per person in the UK, is approximately 150 litres/day. It enrages me that as a conservative user of water, using 50% less than the average person, that I appear to be being charged more for the same rainwater, effectively subsidising those who don't do as much to conserve resources. And as for the so called 25% Council Tax discount for singletons: considering circa 70% of homes in this country have more than one adult, it isn't really a discount, but a subsidy paying for 2 adult households...but that's a story for another forum!"

"You do not show all suppliers. My Gas/Elec supplier is Ovo which doesn't appear"

Ade

"Im paying £417 with northumbrian water and i live in a two bedroomed flat. I've just rang them up and asked why is it so high and even they don't know, they said they will send someone to take a look. The problem is,is that i live above a shop and my water supply runs through there and the shop has closed down."

Ant

"I would like to get monthly water bills. Why do the water bills differ? Is it depended on quality of water? Are all the water bills calculated on water meter?"

Phyu

"I live in a flat in Wiltshire alone. I complained to Thames Water as I was trying to figure out why my bill was larger than a friend that was married with 1 child. It was then I found out that most flats do not have independent meters and the water consumption is divided between the total number of units. It took a while, but I had a meter installed inside the unit. It has saved me money, but I still have to dispute my bill as they (TW)do not read the meter on a regular basis."

"Hi, Could you add a table for cost per cubic meter (with supplier and date)? It would be really interesting to compare. Thanks"

"I live in a 3 bedroom semi-detached house and i pay £825.South west water seem to be able to charge what they like? OFWAT ARE A WASTE OF TIME."

IAN

"I think rain water harvesting should be done by every household. It should be second nature to us like recycling. If every house has a process to harvest the rain water which is abundant in UK then we can significantly lower our water bills."

P Bose

"Hi, this might be of interest. I live in a one bed flat with girlfriend. I had a water meter fitted a number of years ago because it allowed me to take control of my water use. I am in the Anglia area for both water and sewerage. For the 2 of us I am able to keep the water usage to about 10 cubic meters a quarter bill this currently works out about £13 for water and £13 for sewerage with about £25 for standing charge etc with a quaterly bill about £52 working out a year at £210. The way I achieve this is to reuse bath water, washing up water etc to flush the toilet via a £1 B&Q bucket. I know this does not sound ideal but once you get use to the idea its fine and works. The bath is the biggest waste of water so if it can be reused you are basically saving it. We tend to have a couple of baths each a week and a few showers so hygene is not a problem. The best way to start is find your water meter and take readings every day to get a feel of what is being used, then I work out 1 unit = £5. Like I say not everyone can be bothered but if you read your meter then flush the loo, you will get an idea of how much water is used per flush. Note how many times the toilet is used a day, say flushed 10 time etc then over a week then a month and a quater and you can get an idea of the amount of water you are flushing away. Bath is usually not far from the toilet and you acn fill up a bucket via a plastic jug and save a bit. "

"I live on my own in a one bedroom flat. And my water is £60 a month . I complained and said i was paying way to much. They said i used 600 ltrs a day! Impossible!!!!! Its almost 100 per bath, 60 per load of washing etc! Unless i am bathing 6 times a day this is an absolute joke!!!"

"A couple of years ago i argued with our water supplier over a bill and they put us on a standard monthly charge of £16 per person, regardless of size of property. I use this as a guide when comparing our bills now. "

PR

"I found the data very interesting but perhaps you could explain on the page why the "rate per bedroom" table gives an answer double that of the "rate per house" table (or at least it does for a 5 bed house)? "

Ian R

"I live on the North coast of Cornwall, and as far as I know SWW have the highest prices in the country, why? "

Mike

"Live in Brighton with wife and three grown up kids and my metered Water bill is over £100 a month. This is without washing the car and watering the garden. Lets introduce meters in every house. And yes we are careful with how we all use water."

Jock

"if you want a tv liceince you know the price, why are water companies allowed to completly hide the price of water"

rod

"I think the number of people living in a property not number of bedrooms is a major factor of how much water is used. "

steve

"460 a year for water (we recently moved to a 3 bed semi-detached) seems extortionate to me"

Hans

"I dream of the day I pay £534 for mywater £970 is mad. I tried a meter and that was more."

Barry pollard

"Is there any information on Studio flats."

J Hoskin-Goode

"No comparisons given for United Utilities in Merseyside against other rival water suppliers. ???"

Phil McConnon

"I'll have a look but it'll be down to a small sample size. there aren't many 1 bedroom semi's or indeed detached properties."

Admin

"Average cost table seems to be wrong for semi detached houses. 1 beds seem to be the most expensive the more beds you have the less it is."
