UK Water Bills

UK Average Water Bills by Number of Bedrooms and Provider

Presented below is a table which gives an idea, based upon a survey of Whatprice visitors, how much you would expect to pay for your water bill or rates depending on the size and type of property you live in. The amount of each bill depends on the usage (in the case of a water meter) and one would expect that a bigger property with more bedrooms would have more occupants and hence have a higher water bill.

To improve the quality of this service you can submit your own water bill prices using the form below.

Below is another table which shows, based upon visitor feedback, how the average price of a water rates or bill per bedroom varies with supplier. For example, if a flat has 2 bedrooms and the yearly water bill is £300 then the average price per bedroom would be £150.

Examining around the median of the prices, it can be seen that there is little difference between suppliers with a spread of about £20-40 per room per year. Actual values may vary though depending on the sample size. This data does not take into account usage or current discounts as it is based upon all the data we have. The more data we receive, the better the estimate of the prices.

Water Company Resources

Here are some links to the main suppliers of water into our homes. It is possible to switch water supplier but typically you will find less competition in your area than for example for electricity or gas.

Anglian Water - Rates and charges

Wessex Water - Their 2007/2008 rates

Dwr Cymru - A pdf document with their charges for metered and unmetered water supply.

Yorkshire Water - Couldn't find the listing of charges!

Thames Water - God why can't these sites put their charges in a single location. This one is buried in another fairly long pdf...

Severn Trent Water - Again the charges are in 3 pdf files. Maybe its really complicated to work out how much water costs?

Southern Water - I'm beginning to think the water companies are all owned by one super company who provides them with a website template into which you MUST store your charges in a pdf file of no less than 10 pages and bury it within the site?

Unlike the other two utilities there is only one company that I could find as of August 2007 that allows you to compare water companies for best deals and that is

Uswitch - Yes, the one of the TV.

"Live in Brighton with wife and three grown up kids and my metered Water bill is over £100 a month. This is without washing the car and watering the garden. Lets introduce meters in every house. And yes we are careful with how we all use water."

"I think the number of people living in a property not number of bedrooms is a major factor of how much water is used. "

"Average cost table seems to be wrong for semi detached houses. 1 beds seem to be the most expensive the more beds you have the less it is."
