About Sainsbury’s Fuel

Sainsbury’s entered the fuel retailing business in 1974, initially selling petrol and diesel under the Jet brand name at their SavaCentre hypermarkets. In 1980, they began sourcing and selling fuel themselves under the Sainsbury’s brand.

Over the years, Sainsbury’s has been an innovator in fuel retail. In 1998, they launched City Petrol – a cleaner, low-emission unleaded petrol that rewarded customers with Nectar points. In 2001, they partnered with British Gas to provide LPG at forecourts.

In 2004, Sainsbury’s agreed that BP would operate and supply fuel for many of their forecourt sites through a partnership. This deal ended in 2009 with Sainsbury’s regaining control over its fuel sourcing and pricing.

Sainsbury’s was an early adopter in providing electric vehicle charging points at select locations. They were also the first major retailer to phase out selling Russian diesel supplies following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, aligning with the UK’s sanctions.

According to the 2023 UK Petrol Retailers Association review, Sainsbury’s currently holds around 10% market share for fuels sold across Britain.
