Overview of Ideal boilers and their reputation

Ideal Heating is a leading brand in both the domestic and commercial heating sectors. The company’s UK head office is based in Hull, East Yorkshire. In addition to central heating boilers Ideal also offer hot water cylinders, heat pumps, and a range of heating controls.

In August 2018 Ideal Heating became main shirt sponsors of West Bromwich Albion Football Club, and to acknowledge the relationship the club unveiled a new mascot – Boiler Man! A white boiler with legs has been rallying supporters at the club since then which drew its fair share of media attention.

Why choose an Ideal boiler?

Ideal boilers have established a reputation for their high-efficiency and reliability, but one of their most attractive features is their relative affordability. An Ideal boiler will often cost less to install than other leading boiler brands like Vaillant and Worcester Bosch, but homeowners and engineers still praise their performance.

Ideal’s Logic boiler range has won several awards and commendations including Good Housekeeping Guide, Which? Trusted Traders, Energy Saving Trust, and the Quiet Mark accreditation.

Who makes Ideal boilers?

Company background

Founded in 1906, Ideal Heating has been manufacturing high-quality boilers for over 100 years. The  1920s’ Ideal Cookanheat was one of the first British boilers and a revolutionary design. It was a freestanding stove combining an open fire, a central heating boiler, a cooking oven, and a hot cupboard all in one unit. The Cookanheat played a pivotal role in making central heating more affordable for the average home.

In the decades that have followed Ideal have continued to innovate when it comes to heating solutions, and in 2009 they launched the Logic range of boilers. These boilers have an efficiency of over 90% and state-of-the-art technology in a compact unit that fits easily into any standard kitchen cupboard.

All Ideal boilers are manufactured in the UK.

Types of Ideal boilers

Ideal manufactures gas boilers for every property size, including combi, system, and regular boilers.

Ideal combi boilers

Ideal Logic Combi

Combi boilers are compact, all-in-one units that draw water directly from the mains. They provide hot water for both heating and domestic use as needed, offering convenience and energy efficiency since they only heat water when it’s required.

However, since combi boilers don’t store hot water, they can struggle to maintain water pressure when multiple taps demand hot water simultaneously. This can make them less suitable for larger homes or households with higher hot water demands.

Ideal’s range of gas combi boilers includes boilers for small, medium and large homes including:

  • Logic Max Combi (24kW, 30kW, 35kW)
  • Logic+ Combi (24kW, 30kW, 35kW)
  • Vogue Max Combi (26kW, 32kW, 40kW)
  • Vogue GEN2 Combi (26kW, 32kW, 40kW)

All Ideal combi boilers have an ErP efficiency rating of A for both central heating and hot water and include a parts and labour warranty of up to 7, 10 or 12 years when registered within 30 days of installation and serviced annually. You can compare Ideal combi boilers with other manufacturers in our best combi boilers page.

Ideal system boilers

System boilers also draw water directly from the mains, but they work in conjunction with a hot water cylinder, typically stored in an airing cupboard. The cylinder stores the hot water produced by the boiler, ensuring a larger volume of hot water is available to supply multiple radiators, taps, or showers at once without affecting water pressure.

Ideal’s range of gas system boilers includes boilers for small, medium and large homes including:

  • Logic Max System (15kW, 18kW, 24kW, 30kW)
  • Logic+ System (15kW, 18kW, 24kW, 30kW)
  • Vogue Max System (15kW, 18kW, 26kW, 32kW)
  • Vogue GEN2 System (15kW, 18kW, 26kW, 32kW)

While the boiler will only provide hot water for your central heating, it can be used with Ideal’s range of high efficiency cylinders to also provide hot water for your taps.

All Ideal system boilers have an ErP efficiency rating of A for central heating and include a parts and labour warranty of up to 7, 10 or 12 years when registered within 30 days of installation and serviced annually.

Ideal regular boilers

Regular boilers (also known as traditional or conventional boilers) are similar to system boilers in that they work alongside a hot water cylinder, allowing them to supply multiple water outlets at once.

The key difference between a system and a regular boiler is that regular boilers don’t draw their water supply from the mains. Instead, they rely on a large cold water feeder tank, usually located in the attic.

Regular boilers were the original design before technology allowed for direct connection to the mains, which typically results in stronger water pressure. Despite this, regular boilers can still be an ideal heating solution in modern homes, especially in areas with low mains water pressure.

Ideal’s range of gas regular boilers includes boilers for small, medium and large homes including:

  • Logic MAX Heat (12kW, 15kW, 18kW, 24kW, 30kW)
  • Logic+ Heat (12kW, 15kW, 18kW, 24kW, 30kW)
  • Mexico HE (15kW, 18kW, 24kW, 30kW, 36kW)

Ideal’s regular boilers have an ErP efficiency rating of A for central heating. The Logic MAX Heat and Logic+ Heat include a parts and labour warranty of up to 7 or 10 years when registered within 30 days of installation and serviced annually. The floor standing Mexico HE models include a 2-year parts and labour warranty.

Best Ideal boilers for different homes

Having examined the typical cost of Ideal boilers including and excluding installation, your next task is to identify the best boiler model for your home.

It’s usually a good idea to seek the advice of a qualified heating engineer before purchasing a boiler to make sure you’re getting the right solution, but here is a summary of Ideal boiler models and where they are best suited.

Best combi boiler for small homes & apartments

The Logic+ Combi 24kW boiler is an ideal choice for small homes and apartments. Thanks to its compact design the Logic+ can be installed into a kitchen cupboard which is perfect for homes where space is limited. The boiler provides heating and hot water on demand with no need for a storage cylinder and is available in three different sizes so you can choose the one best for your hot water usage levels.

Best system boiler for family homes

For busy family homes with a higher demand for hot water, the Ideal Logic+ System 24 or 30kW boiler is a great choice. The System boiler provides hot water for your central heating, but because it works alongside a hot water cylinder (usually stored in an airing cupboard) you’ll have a higher volume of hot water for baths and showers. Not only is it an award-winning boiler (having received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2013 and Good Housekeeping Reader Recommended Status in 2013 and 2017), but it’s also approved by the Energy Saving Trust and includes with a 10-year heat exchanger warranty.

Best regular boiler for large homes

The Logic+ Heat 30kW regular boiler could be a suitable choice for larger homes with a feed tank of water in the attic and a hot water cylinder. This model received the Good Housekeeping Reader Recommended Status in 2013 and 2017, is endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust and has built-in frost protection.

Key features of Ideal boilers

While each Ideal boiler model offers its own benefits, there are some features that are found across their product range.

Energy efficiency and savings

All Ideal combi, system and regular boilers are A rated for ErP efficiency. This is the highest level of efficiency a boiler can be given, as it means for every £1 spent on fuel for your boiler, less than 10p is wasted.

Several Ideal boilers are also endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust for their efficiency

12-year warranty

With 10 and 12- year warranties available on the Vogue Max is reliable and long lasting, complete with an Ideal System Filter to make for one simple purchase.

Quiet Mark accredited

Quiet Mark is a global certification program backed by the UK Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation. Using scientific testing and assessment, Quiet Mark identifies the quietest products across various categories, including central heating. Several of Ideal Heating’s boilers have received the prestigious Quiet Mark accreditation.

Ideal boiler installation

If you do choose Ideal and have decided upon your model, the next step will be the installation of your boiler.

Installation costs for an Ideal boiler

While installation costs will vary depending on the complexity of the work involved and the installer you choose, on average you should expect to pay between £1,200 and £1,700 for an engineer to install an Ideal boiler in your home.

Finding the right installer

When choosing an installer, it is essential to ensure that they are Gas Safe registered. It is illegal and highly dangerous for anyone other than a Gas Safe installer to carry out installation, maintenance or repairs on a gas appliance.

Comparing quotes and installation costs

Finally, it is important to find and compare at least 3 different installation quotes from Gas Safe engineers. Comparing multiple quotes gives you the chance to ensure you are paying a fair price for the work. It is also worth asking to see customer recommendations and checking online review sites to ensure you have chosen a reputable installer.

Ideal boiler warranties

Installing a new boiler is not cheap so you want to ensure you are making a long-term investment that will stand the test of time. Of course, you also want peace of mind that if something were to go wrong, the manufacturer will be there to support you.

Warranty coverage and duration

With the exception of the Mexico HE floor standing boiler which is only eligible for a 2-year warranty, the rest of the boilers are eligible for extended warranties of 7, 10 or 12-year parts and labour warranty.

However, it’s important to note that these warranties are only valid if you register your new boiler with Ideal within 30 days of its installation and ensure it is serviced annually. You will then be able to enjoy the maximum warranty available which should give you great peace of mind. If the boiler is not registered and/or not serviced annually, the period of guarantee will be to 12 months from the date of installation.

How to extend your boiler warranty

In some cases, the warranty on a boiler can be extended if the boiler is installed with an Ideal System Filter or an additional fee is paid.

FAQs

The Ideal Logic+ boiler range is widely regarded as one of the most reliable boilers from Ideal Heating. It has a strong reputation for performance, durability and efficiency, making it a popular choice for many homeowners. It includes a standard 7-year warranty which can be extended to 10 years.

Ideal Heating and Worcester Bosch are both respected boiler brands in the UK, but there are some differences to consider. Worcester Bosch is widely regarded as having some of the highest quality boilers on the market, lengthy warranties, and excellent customer service. The brand has topped the Which? Best Buy survey for the last 15 years.

Unsurprisingly, Worcester Bosch boilers come with higher price tags than Ideal boilers, and as Ideal boilers are still award-winning, energy efficient and reliable, so more budget-conscious homeowners might be swayed by the savings.

As standard an Ideal boiler is covered by a 12-month warranty from the date of installation. However, if the boiler is registered within 30 days of installation and serviced annually, the warranty extends to 7, 10 or 12 years in some cases. Including an Ideal System Filter in the installation can also extend the warranty.

Ideal boilers are ErP rated A for efficiency which is the top level awarded to boilers. Several Ideal boilers have also been endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust.

Generally Ideal boilers are well-regarded for their efficiency and reliability, but the company’s aftercare service has received mixed feedback. Some of the issues reported include repair issues that weren’t fixed on the first visit leading to further disruptions like loss of heating or hot water, delays of several days or weeks for engineers to visit, customer service communication issues.
