Prices for external rendering

Rendering has seen a resurgence in recent years due to the introduction of modern silicon and polymer renders and the more efficient application methods that have have been developed alongside these to make them quicker and easier to apply.

The original and very popular pebble dash is now seen as perhaps a fairly dated exterior finish, it consists of a thick base coat, covered with a render of small stones. These older styles of render can degrade over time with blown cement and cracks appearing, this happens when the surface coating has become separated from the thick base coat or the whole surface has separated from the wall behind.

Modern renders are often a more flexible single layer to accommodate building movement and in some cases breathable as well, reducing the moisture build up which can cause havoc with damp and damage in freezing winter conditions.

Types of external render

Pebble Dash

Pebble dash is a type of render where small stones or pebbles are thrown onto wet render, creating a rough, textured finish. It’s commonly seen on older properties and offers a distinctive look.

Pros: Durable, low-maintenance, and provides good weather protection. It can hide surface imperfections and is resistant to cracking.

Cons: Often considered outdated and aesthetically unappealing by some. Difficult to repair, and matching the existing texture can be challenging.

Cement Render

Cement render is a mixture of sand, cement, and sometimes lime, applied to external walls to create a smooth or textured finish.

Pros: Affordable, versatile, and provides good protection against weather. Can be painted any color and is relatively easy to apply.

Cons: Prone to cracking over time, especially if not applied correctly or if the building moves. Requires regular maintenance and repainting to keep it looking fresh.

Lime Render

Lime render is a traditional rendering material made from lime, sand, and water, often used on older or historic buildings.

Pros: Breathable, flexible, and allows moisture to evaporate, preventing damp issues. It’s eco-friendly and ideal for older properties as it adapts to building movements.

Cons: More expensive and time-consuming to apply compared to cement render. Requires skilled application and regular maintenance to prevent deterioration.

Acrylic Render

Acrylic render is a modern rendering system that includes acrylic, a type of plastic, in its mix, making it highly flexible and crack-resistant.

Pros: Highly flexible, crack-resistant, and available in a wide range of colors and textures. Provides a smooth finish and excellent weather resistance.

Cons: More expensive than traditional renders. Can trap moisture if not applied correctly, leading to potential damp issues over time.

Silicone Render

Silicone render is a breathable, water-repellent render with silicone added to the mix, offering a self-cleaning surface that stays clean longer.

Pros: Highly breathable, flexible, and offers excellent water resistance. Self-cleaning properties keep it looking fresh for longer, reducing maintenance.

Cons: One of the more expensive render types. Requires a skilled application, and incorrect installation can lead to performance issues.

Monocouche Render

Monocouche is a single-layer render that is pre-mixed with color pigments, eliminating the need for painting. It provides a decorative finish with good weather resistance.

Pros: Fast application due to single-layer process, available in various colors, and low maintenance as it does not require painting. Durable and resistant to weathering.

Cons: Prone to cracking if not applied correctly. More expensive than traditional cement render and may require specialist contractors for application.
