Vaillant EcoFIT Sustain Combi Boiler Cost with Installation

  • Written by Georgina Holmes
  • Last updated 12 July 2026

The Vaillant ecoFIT sustain costs approximately £950 for the 825 (25kW), £1,050 for the 830 (30kW), and £1,150 for the 835 (35kW).
With installation costs of around £1,200, the total cost of the boiler and installation can cost anywhere between £2,150 and £2,350.

The Vaillant ecoFIT sustain is hand-built at Vaillant’s Derbyshire manufacturing plant and designed primarily for new build, social housing, and refurbishment projects rather than over-the-counter purchases.

All three outputs carry a Quiet Mark certification, an ErP A-rating, a 1:5 modulation range, and a patented four-sided cooling system on the aluminium heat exchanger. The standard warranty is 2 years, extendable to 10 years when installed by a Vaillant Advance registered installer.

Vaillant EcoFIT Sustain Combi overview

Vaillant designed the ecoFIT sustain specifically for the specification market – housing developers, architects, and social housing providers – rather than for standard retail. It is hand-built at Vaillant’s award-winning facility in Belper, Derbyshire, using sustainably sourced materials that make it 100% recyclable.

The rear and top flue options give specifiers flexibility on plant room and cupboard installations where a standard side-wall exit is impractical. The Grundfos high-efficiency modulating pump, 1:5 modulation range, and Quiet Mark certification are all features more common on boilers at a higher price point.

For homeowners in new build properties or refurbishment schemes where the sustain has been specified, it performs reliably across all three outputs. For homeowners buying independently, the ecoFIT pure is the closer retail equivalent and is generally more accessible in terms of warranty tier and installer availability.

28kWFlats, 1-2 bedrooms1Up to 10
30kWSmall to medium homes, 2-3 bedrooms1 & ensuiteUp to 15
35kWMedium homes, 3-4 bedrooms2Up to 20

Getting the output right matters as much as the boiler itself. The 825 delivers 10.4 l/min, adequate for a flat or small home with a single bathroom. The 830 reaches 12.2 l/min, well suited to a three-bedroom home with a bathroom and ensuite. The 835 reaches 14.1 l/min and handles two bathrooms in everyday use, though for households expecting frequent simultaneous demand from both, a system boiler with a cylinder is a more reliable configuration.

Vaillant EcoTec Sustain Combi technical specifications

The ecoFIT sustain’s specification reads more like a premium mid-range boiler than an entry-level product. The combination of a 1:5 modulation range, Grundfos pump, Quiet Mark certification, rear and top flue options, and a 10m maximum flue length across all outputs gives specifiers a level of flexibility and performance that most retail combis do not offer at this footprint.

The four-sided cooling system on the aluminium heat exchanger is the most distinctive feature. Conventional heat exchangers experience thermal stress concentrated at the point where combustion gases contact the surface; the four-sided design distributes that stress across a larger area, extending the exchanger’s working life. The exchanger is lightweight relative to its output – a deliberate design choice to keep the boiler manageable in high-volume installation projects.

Output and efficiency ratings

All three models carry 94% efficiency and an ErP A-rating. As condensing boilers, they recover heat from flue gases that older non-condensing installations expelled.

The 1:5 modulation range means the minimum output under low demand is approximately one fifth of the rated maximum – around 5kW on the 825. This is a wider modulation ratio than the 1:4 of the ecoFIT pure and significantly wider than the 1:2 or 1:3 of many lower-tier combis, which translates to less on-off cycling in properties with moderate or variable heating demand.

The Grundfos high-efficiency modulating pump adjusts speed to match system demand rather than running at a fixed rate, reducing electricity consumption and improving distribution efficiency across the heating circuit.

Dimensions

At 700mm tall, 390mm wide, and 295mm deep, the ecoFIT sustain fits a standard 300mm deep cupboard with minimal clearance – confirm exact clearance requirements at survey stage.

The rear and top flue options are the sustain’s most distinctive installation advantage over retail combis, which typically offer only a side-wall horizontal flue as standard. Rear flue routing allows the boiler to sit flush against a wall with the flue exiting directly behind the unit, eliminating the need to route pipework to an external wall position. Top flue routing suits rooms and installations where the vertical exit is more practical. Both options accept the same flue system with a maximum 10m run across all three outputs.

Components included

The aluminium heat exchanger uses Vaillant’s patented four-sided cooling system, which distributes thermal stress across all four sides of the exchanger rather than concentrating it on the combustion face. This is a Vaillant-specific design feature shared with the ecoFIT pure range and is cited by Vaillant as reducing the long-term maintenance cost of the component.

The warm start function keeps a small volume of water pre-heated at the heat exchanger, reducing the lag between opening a tap and receiving hot water. It operates using residual heat rather than actively firing the burner between draws, which limits its energy use. In practice, owners in properties where the boiler is some distance from the point of use may still notice a short delay before hot water arrives at the tap – this is a function of pipe length rather than the warm start system itself.

The built-in two-stage frost protection activates at 5°C and 3°C respectively, running the pump and then the burner in sequence to prevent freezing in unoccupied or unheated properties – a relevant feature for new build plots that may sit empty before occupation.

The patented condensate trap design allows removal from the base of the boiler for cleaning without disconnecting the flue or removing the unit from the wall, which is a practical advantage in buildings where the boiler is serviced by a maintenance contractor on a scheduled basis.

Controls compatibility extends to the full range of Vaillant wireless and wired thermostats, including the vSMART app-based control with weather compensation. Weather compensation adjusts flow temperature based on outdoor conditions, reducing energy use during mild weather and improving seasonal efficiency beyond the headline ErP A-rating.

Prices and installation costs

The Vaillant ecoFIT sustain costs approximately £950 for the 825 (25kW), £1,050 for the 830 (30kW), and £1,150 for the 835 (35kW). With installation costs of around £1,200, the total cost of the boiler and installation can cost anywhere between £2,150 and £2,350.

As a specification-market product, the sustain is typically quoted and supplied through Vaillant Advance registered installers rather than retail channels. Our prices include a standard flue. The sustain’s rear and top flue options mean routing costs can vary more than with a standard horizontal side-wall flue – a rear flue installation is generally straightforward, while a top flue exit through a roof requires additional labour and roofing work; budget £300-£500 extra for a vertical roof exit.

Using a mid-range installation figure of approximately £1,200:

Vaillant EcoFIT Sustain Combi Costs
Output sizeUnit cost (incl. flue)Total (incl. installation)
825 (25kW)£950£2,150
830 (30kW)£1,050£2,250
835 (35kW)£1,150£2,350

These prices are indicative only, based on our research and actual boiler prices submitted to WhatPrice by homeowners. For a broader overview of Vaillant pricing across the full range, see our Vaillant boiler prices guide

Warranty and support

The ecoFIT sustain carries a 2-year standard warranty, extendable to 5 or 10 years when installed by a Vaillant Advance registered installer. Annual servicing by a Vaillant Advance installer is required to maintain the extended cover. The 2-year standard tier is shorter than most retail combis in this class, which is a deliberate reflection of the sustain’s specification-market positioning – in new build and social housing projects, the installer is almost always a Vaillant Advance partner, and the 10-year tier is effectively the standard outcome.

For homeowners inheriting a sustain in a purchased property, confirming the original installer’s registration status and the warranty activation date with Vaillant directly is worth doing at the point of purchase. Vaillant’s UK customer service operates through both its direct engineer network and the Advance installer network, with parts availability strong nationally.

Installation information

A standard like-for-like combi swap typically costs around £1,200 and can be completed in a day. The ecoFIT sustain’s rear and top flue options give installers greater flexibility in positioning, and the accessible component layout allows all parts to be replaced from the front without removing the boiler from the wall.

What to expect on installation day

  • Survey first
The installation position and flue route is confirmed. The rear flue option makes positioning more flexible than standard horizontal-only combis, but the 295mm depth should be measured against the available cupboard depth including clearances.
  • Removing the old boiler
The old boiler is drained, disconnected, and removed. Converting from a system or regular boiler with a cylinder or loft tank adds a day to the job.
  • Installing the new boiler
Mounted on the wall bracket, pipework and flue connected. If a Vaillant Advance installer is being used to activate the extended warranty, confirm the registration is being submitted as part of the commissioning process.
  • Controls pairing
If a vSMART or other Vaillant wireless control is being fitted, it is paired and tested during commissioning.
  • Handover
Benchmark logbook completed and warranty registered. Confirm whether the 2-year or 10-year tier has been activated and what the annual servicing requirement is to maintain cover.

Do you need a system flush or filter?

UK Building Regulations require a magnetic filter on any new boiler installation. The filter captures iron oxide and metallic debris before they reach the heat exchanger – the aluminium exchanger in the sustain performs best in a clean system, and a quality filter from Vaillant, Adey, or Fernox satisfies both the regulatory requirement and the warranty conditions.

A powerflush of existing pipework is separate to the filter requirement and is not legally mandated, but on a system more than ten years old it is strongly recommended. Budget £350-£800 for a powerflush depending on the number of radiators, and £80-£120 for a compatible magnetic filter.

Finding a Gas Safe registered engineer

All gas boiler installations must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. For the 10-year warranty, the installer must also hold Vaillant Advance status.

Reviews and ratings

Vaillant holds a 4.6 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot UK, based on over 23,000 reviews. ecoFIT sustain-specific reviews on Trustpilot are limited, which reflects the boiler’s specification-market positioning – most sustain installations go into new build and managed housing schemes rather than private replacement projects.

Positive reviews

The clearest positive account describes a homeowner replacing an older Ideal boiler with the ecoFIT sustain and reporting immediate running cost savings, a professional installation, and competitive pricing from the outset.

Vaillant’s own service engineers also draw positive feedback: one reviewer who had the sustain serviced by a Vaillant engineer notes the technician was cheaper than expected compared to an independent, resolved a records mismatch on the same visit, and left the owner markedly more confident in using Vaillant’s own service channel going forward.

Negative reviews

Two issues appear in the sustain-specific pool. The first is delayed hot water delivery: one owner on a water meter reports needing to run three bowls of water before the supply reaches temperature, describing the experience as inconsistent with the boiler’s eco positioning. This is the same warm start lag that affects all combis to some degree when the boiler is some distance from the point of use; the delay relates to how much cold water sits in the pipe between the boiler and the tap rather than the boiler itself, but it catches owners off guard when the product is marketed on sustainability grounds.

The second and more serious account involves a new build bungalow where an ecoFIT sustain 830 developed a recurring banging noise during hot water use shortly after a 2019 installation. Two Vaillant engineer visits – replacing a component and then a circuit board in succession – failed to resolve the underlying fault. A subsequent service engineer issued a Warning Notice for incomplete combustion on domestic hot water, identifying the same problem two years on. The case was escalated to both Vaillant and the original builder.

This is a single account and cannot be generalised across the range, but it does underscore a specific risk of specification-market installations: where the original commissioning is carried out by a builder’s contractor rather than a Vaillant Advance specialist, fault patterns can persist if the initial setup was not completed correctly.

Final thoughts – is the Vaillant EcoFIT Sustain combi right for you?

The ecoFIT sustain sits in an unusual position for a boiler guide: it is technically strong, competitively priced, and carries a specification that outperforms many retail alternatives – but it is designed for a market that does not typically shop for boilers in the way homeowners do. If a sustain has been installed in your property as part of a new build or refurbishment scheme, it is a well-engineered boiler with a reliable track record and strong manufacturer support. For homeowners choosing a boiler independently, the ecoFIT pure is the closer retail equivalent and is more straightforwardly accessible through retail channels and the broader Vaillant Advance installer network.

The 2-year standard warranty is the most significant practical limitation for private buyers. The Worcester Bosch Greenstar CDi Compact offers 7 years as standard before any installer conditions are applied – a meaningful gap for homeowners who cannot guarantee a Vaillant Advance installer at the point of purchase. The sustain closes that gap with the 10-year Advance-linked tier, but the route to it requires more coordination than the CDi Compact’s simpler structure.

Against the ecoFIT pure, the sustain offers a wider 1:5 modulation range (vs 1:4) and rear or top flue options in addition to the side-wall horizontal. For new build and managed refurbishment projects where those specifications are required, the sustain is the correct choice. For a standard domestic replacement in a property with a straightforward external wall flue exit, the ecoFIT pure delivers the same core Vaillant engineering with marginally broader installer availability at a similar price.

FAQ

The sustain is a specification-market product, designed primarily for new build and social housing projects. It is typically ordered and installed through Vaillant Advance registered installers rather than purchased from retail merchants. Homeowners seeking a retail equivalent should consider the Vaillant ecoFIT pure, which shares much of the same engineering.

1:5 across all three models (825, 830, 835). This means the minimum output under low demand is approximately one fifth of the rated maximum. A wider modulation range reduces on-off cycling in properties with variable heating demand, improving comfort and efficiency at part load.

No. The ecoFIT sustain is natural gas only. For LPG properties, Vaillant offers LPG-compatible models in the ecoTEC range.

Yes. The ecoFIT sustain is compatible with hydrogen-blended gas supplies of up to 20%, in line with the current UK gas grid transition planning.

The warm start function keeps water pre-heated in the heat exchanger, but the time it takes to reach the tap depends on the length of pipe between the boiler and the point of use. In properties where the boiler is some distance from the bathroom or kitchen, cold water sitting in the pipe will run before hot water arrives regardless of the boiler type. A pressurised hot water cylinder or a recirculating hot water system resolves this where it is a persistent concern.
