aroTHERM Plus
Our research suggests that up to 90% of UK homes would be compatible with a Vaillant
aroTHERM Plus Heat Pump.
As the go-to Vaillant domestic heat pump, the aroTHERM Plus system is perfect for the transition away from a boiler. It’s also a great choice for energy efficiency, as it offers a very solid performance across its heating and hot water capabilities.
Adding to its green credentials, aroTHERM Plus heat pumps use the natural refrigerant R290 which in turn means higher flow temperatures can be achieved. aroTHERM Split
When you want to install a Vaillant air source heat pump but the aroTHERM Plus range presents installation challenges, the aroTHERM Split could provide a solution. It is designed as a domestic heat pump but can also cater to light commercial heat pump installations too.
As the name suggests, ‘Split’ technology means that the refrigerant circuit is split between indoor and outdoor units. The unit is pre-filled with refrigerant, meaning it can support an installation up to 15 metres away from your home. This includes if you want to install the heat pump in the garden, on a wall or on a flat roof.
Putting more distance between your home and a heat pump can reduce the noise levels of Vaillant heat pumps. Vaillant explains that installing the aroTHERM Split just three metres away from your property will reduce the noise levels to just 35 dB. As a result, it is an ideal heat pump even for ‘densely packed terrace houses’.
While the UK government has recently relaxed heat pump planning laws relating to noise levels, the ability to install your heat pump well away from your property or neighbours remains advantageous. Although, many Vaillant heat pumps also have ‘Quiet Mark’ certification as standard.
flexoTHERM
Finally, flexoTHERM is Vaillant’s most expensive and sophisticated heat pump solution. While billed as a ground source heat pump, it can also be modified to draw thermal energy from water or air.
Designed as a residential heat pump, the flexoTHERM can also be cascaded to accommodate larger commercial premises. However, when used as a residential heat pump, the flexoTHERM is only suitable for underfloor heating and fan coil systems as it must work with a ground collector. Though, this offers excellent suitability for new build properties or retrofitting projects.
Granted, the flexoTHERM requires a more complex and lengthy installation and it’s also pricier than other Vaillant heat pumps. But in return, flexoTHERM top-tier energy efficiency, quiet performance and easy integration with solar, hot water storage and ventilation systems. The Vaillant Heat Pump Plus scheme
Vaillant is one of several heat pump manufacturers in the UK to partner with OVO in offering customers a special green energy tariff, called ‘Heat Pump Plus’.
According to Vaillant, you can save an additional £450 per year on Heat Pump Plus if you have a Vaillant aroTHERM or aroTHERM plus air source heat pump installed. This is based on the company’s calculations which states this will reduce your running costs from 21p per kWh to 15p per kWh.
Cost vs benefit over time
Vaillant states its heat pumps rely on 75% of outside energy, with the remaining 25% powered by electricity.
As we’ve just touched upon, this electricity requirement can mean heat pumps have higher running costs than gas boilers.
However, there is a bit more to consider to make a proper judgement here. That’s because heat pumps are also three times more efficient than gas boilers.
Also, with the volatility of gas prices in recent years, there’s also nothing to stop gas prices from rising even more in the near future, which could make getting off the gas network best in the long run.

The UK government is very keen to push low carbon technology, meaning there’s more than just the BUS scheme to explore.
ECO4 is due to run until March 2026 and will cover the total cost of a Vaillant heat pump, so long as you qualify.
While you don’t need to be claiming benefits to be eligible for ECO4, you must be classed as living in a low income or vulnerable household. You may also qualify if your property has an EPC rating of D-G.
